River of Stories

The Australian Sikh Heritage Trail is a walking trail in Western Australia that connects four historical nodes, each marking a different chapter of Sikh settlement and contribution to the state. The film follows the trail's creation, led by volunteers from the Australian Sikh Heritage Association, and the stories it tells: Sikh workers who came as part of the early pastoral and railway economy, the WA Sikh cremation site that was nearly erased from the historical record, the Indigenous welcome that opens the trail in recognition of who was here first, and the Dowsett family whose friendship with a Sikh worker a century ago was strong enough to be remembered by their grandchildren.

River of Stories is also about what happens when a community decides its history deserves a physical home. The trail was funded by a community lottery grant and built by volunteers who wanted their children to have a place in the landscape, a site connected to the land, where they could stand and say: our people have been here. For Sikh families in Australia who have sometimes felt invisible, the trail is proof that they are not strangers. They never were.
