Powering the Gurdwaras of Punjab with Solar Energy (USM Power Project)

In 2021, United Sikh Mission, under the leadership of Sardar Rashpal Singh Dheendsa, launched a project to install rooftop solar panels at Shri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar and several other major Gurdwaras across Punjab. The project generated a combined 1.2 megawatts of clean energy across multiple sites, including 525 kilowatts at the Golden Temple complex alone, and was completed within 11 months of breaking ground. The goal was straightforward: uninterrupted, clean power for sacred sites, cutting the reliance on conventional energy sources and reducing the carbon footprint of institutions visited by millions of people each year.

The film follows the project from announcement to completion, documenting the technical work, the community volunteers who monitored progress, and the broader vision behind it. This was Phase 1. Phase 2 is already planned, with more Gurdwaras set to receive solar installations. The project exists at the intersection of Sikh environmental philosophy, rooted in Guru Nanak's teachings about the sanctity of the natural world, and practical action. It's a film about what happens when a community decides that its values require it to do something concrete about the health of the planet.
