Synopsis
Prajant Singh Samra came from Punjab and ended up farming in the Coachella Valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in California. Over time, he built an operation of more than 400 acres, becoming one of the dominant okra producers in the region and earning the nickname that became his identity. The film follows him through his work and his life, capturing a man who brought the farming instincts of Punjab to the specific demands of desert agriculture in Southern California.
The Okra King's story is part of a much larger history of Punjabi Sikh farmers who came to California and transformed its agricultural landscape. Prajant's success required adapting his knowledge to a new climate, a new market, and a new country, while holding onto the values and work ethic that he brought with him. The film is a portrait of someone who understood that his best path forward was to do what he already knew how to do, just in a different place, with the same commitment that had always defined him.
