Synopsis
Maa-Aneesha is a narrative short that follows Kirat and Dilreet, two adult siblings who travel from abroad to Punjab to investigate their mother Aneesha's death, which they suspect was the result of domestic violence. The film moves between the present investigation and what the siblings piece together about their mother's life, building a portrait of a woman whose suffering went unacknowledged by the systems around her. It's a mystery with a moral weight that goes beyond its plot.
The film takes on domestic violence within South Asian families directly and without deflection, treating it as something that happens in real communities and that real people have to reckon with, often after it's too late to intervene. Kirat and Dilreet's search for truth is also a search for understanding: how does violence like this happen, who knew and said nothing, and what does it mean to love someone you couldn't protect? Maa-Aneesha is a film that asks difficult questions about silence, complicity, and what a family owes its most vulnerable members.
