L-Fresh The Lion

Growing up in Southwest Sydney as the child of South Asian immigrants, L-Fresh the Lion found hip-hop at 13 or 14. Music gives him a way to examine Sikh identity, the distance from a motherland, and the language and culture that migration and time can erode. His songs make room for the Australian life he knows and the heritage he's still learning to name.

The film follows rehearsals, local gigs, festivals, and studio work as he builds a band and prepares to release his first albums. He talks about finding confidence, connecting with a Sikh Punjabi community, and making music that speaks to people in Southwest Sydney. With each performance, he pushes back against the idea that hip-hop belongs only to somewhere else.

L-Fresh also faces racism and the pressure of being seen as an outsider. Through songs about marginalization, social justice, and cultural pride, he challenges stereotypes and makes space for stories his community rarely sees in the Australian music industry. Benjamin Yates' 2016 film shows an artist using every beat to fight erasure and speak to the next generation.
