Synopsis
International Coin Mafia is a narrative film that follows SSP, a Sikh coin collector and self-styled activist, on a mission to recover Sikh artifacts and heritage objects that were looted during the violence of 1984. The film uses the premise of coin collecting and the underground trade in cultural objects as its engine, blending the procedural world of provenance and theft with the historical weight of a community's stolen identity. SSP is not a conventional hero, which is part of what makes him compelling.
The film approaches the subject of looted Sikh heritage through a genre frame that keeps it accessible and propulsive rather than elegiac. The stakes are real: objects taken from a community during a moment of extreme violence carry meaning that goes beyond their monetary value. International Coin Mafia takes those stakes seriously while also telling a genuinely entertaining story about a man who decides that recovering what was taken is worth whatever it costs him personally.
