Synopsis
Narenyan Khalsa is a Sikh gemstone miner who works alongside the Otteson family in the Nevada desert, pulling turquoise from the ground in one of the most storied gem-mining regions in the American West. The film follows him through the physical work of mining, through the landscapes that shape it, and through the human relationships built around a shared passion for what the earth holds. His presence in this world is unexpected, which the film acknowledges without making it the point.
Hidden Gems is at its best when it lets the work speak for itself. There is something meditative about the act of mining, about the patience required and the unpredictability of what you find. Narenyan brings to it the same focused dedication that he brings to his faith and his life, and the film finds the connection between those things without overstating it. It's a portrait of a man who found his place in an unexpected corner of America and made something meaningful there.
