Ferrofluid

Ferrofluid is a ten-piece experimental band out of Chandigarh, where folk, classical, and electronic music meet and turn into something new. This Sikhlens documentary follows them on the road to the Kabir Yatra, a grassroots music festival in the deserts of Rajasthan, where they sing the words of Kabir, Bulleh Shah, and Shiv Kumar Batalvi to crowds sitting in the dust.

The band is barely a year old. What ties ten young musicians together is hard to name, and the film doesn't pretend to pin it down. The members call it an impulse, a thread that connects whoever is on stage.

Even the name carries a quiet idea. Ferrofluid is a liquid NASA uses to move fuel toward a rocket engine where there's no gravity to pull it. One musician says their music does the same thing for a listener. It helps a soul travel.

By the end, after a performance that leaves people lying flat in the desert, the film arrives somewhere larger than music. Old poetry, raw Punjabi sound, and the dust of Rajasthan come together on the body itself, and one voice asks what truth could be greater than this.
