Synopsis
In 2017, Manka Dhingra won a special election for Washington State's 45th district, becoming the first Sikh woman elected to the state senate and flipping the chamber's majority in the process. Her victory was both a personal achievement and a political turning point, but this film isn't interested in the headlines. It's interested in the person behind them: a prosecutor, a mother, and an activist who ran not because politics was her dream but because she believed something important was at stake.
The film traces her path from her work as a public defender and mental health advocate to her decision to enter the race and the campaign that followed. It examines what representation actually means when you're the first: the weight of being seen as a symbol while also simply trying to do your job. Manka's story is grounded in the specific context of Washington State politics, but what it's really about is the question of who gets to lead and what happens when communities that have long been absent from the table decide to take a seat.
